Guilt “Bad for your Health”

November 4th, 2007 by nelden

People who feel guilty about life’s pleasures may be damaging their health, research has found.

Previous studies have provided strong evidence that positive thinking has a beneficial impact on well-being.

Now researchers have told the annual conference of the British Psychological Society in Winchester that feelings of guilt may reduce the ability of the immune system to fight off illness.

A team from the University of Hull asked volunteers to list their most pleasurable activities.

These included sex, eating chocolate, drinking and smoking.

They were then asked to rate them according to how much pleasure and guilt they caused.

The volunteers also provided samples of saliva which were measured for levels of immunoglobulin A.

Strong immune system

High levels of immunoglobulin A are associated with a strong immune system, and the ability to fight off illness.

The researchers found that immunoglobulin A levels were lower in those people whose pleasures were accompanied by more feelings of guilt.

Dr Geoff Lowe, a chartered health psychologist who took part in the study, said the findings were consistent with previous research he had conducted that showed people with low levels of guilt were less likely to go to the doctor, or to report suffering from colds or flu.

He said: “This biological reaction may be a kind of reward for doing things that are good for us.”

He also said that feelings of guilt were useful if they helped to dissuade people from doing things that were bad for them.

“If one enjoys chocolate, but every time one eats a bar one experiences feelings of guilt then it might eventually lead to a modification of that behaviour.”

Feminists Have More Fun

Feminism boosts sexual satisfaction for both men and women, a new study suggests.

Busting stereotypes that peg feminists as men-haters, a new study shows that having a feminist partner is linked with healthier, more romantic heterosexual relationships.

The study, published online this week in the journal Sex Roles, relied on surveys of both college students and older adults, finding that women with egalitarian attitudes do find mates and men do find them attractive. In fact, results reveal they are having a good time, maybe a better time than the non-feminists.

Both men and women are prone to holding negative views of feminists, the authors say. Along with the sexually unattractive stereotype, some women also view feminism as a movement for victims, or for women who aren’t competent enough to achieve success on their own merit, according to the Rutgers University researchers.

Psychologists Laurie Rudman and Julie Phelan carried out a laboratory survey of 242 Rutgers undergraduates and conducted an online survey of 289 older adults who had an average age of 26 and typically had been in their current relationship about four years.

Older adults have more life experience “and thus may be more likely to show an incompatibility between feminism and romantic relationships,” Rudman and Phelan write. While younger females likely grew up with the attitude that “women can have it all,” the researchers note older women may have come of age in the era following U.S. women’s suffrage (1919) or during the women’s movement that emerged in the 1960s.

The researchers looked at people’s perception of their own feminism, their partner’s feminism and whether they had positive views of feminists and career women. Other survey measures included overall relationship quality, agreement about gender equality, relationship stability and sexual satisfaction.

For example, relationship quality was measured with questions such as: How often do you and your partner laugh together? And how often do you and your partner quarrel? For stability measures, participants answered how often they considered terminating the relationship, as well as how often they thought their romantic relationship had a good future.

Among the findings:
College-age women who reported having feminist male partners also reported higher quality relationships that were more stable than couples involving non-feminist male partners.

College guys who were themselves feminists and had feminist partners reported more equality in their relationships.

Older women who perceived their male partners as feminists reported greater relationship health and sexual satisfaction.

Older men with feminist partners said they had more stable relationships and greater sexual satisfaction.

Overall, feminism and romance do go hand in hand, the scientists say.

While they aren’t sure how feminism works to enhance relationship health, the researchers have some ideas. Feminist men might be more supportive of their female partner’s ambitions than are traditionalists. Men with feminist partners may enjoy the extra breadwinner to share the economic burden of maintaining a household.

LIVING THE WRITER’S LIFE

October 14th, 2007 by nelden

Published in Jakarta Post’s WEEKENDER Magazine, September 29, 2007.

Living the Writer’s Life

What is it like being a writer in Indonesia? Nelden Djakababa talks with four young people about what it takes to write for a living.

In the last few years, there has been a significant increase in the number of book titles put out each year. For aspiring writers, it’s kind of a good sign.

“For sure there are now more books out there, although that does not necessarily mean an increase in quality as well,” says Harumi Supit, who left the world of investment consulting to become a full-time freelance writer at the beginning of this year.

“But that gives us a chance to read both trash and classics. Anyway, there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a good trashy book.”

But 29-year-old Harumi and other writers seeking to pen their first novel find that it takes patience, determination and, most importantly, finding other sources of income to fuel their dream.

Netta Asril, whose first novel about a humanitarian worker is in its final editing stages, works at an international organization.

“I don’t think you can make a living exclusively from fiction writing yet, but maybe it’s possible if you also write articles, film scripts and do other different forms of writing at the same time,” says Netta, who first tried to sell her short stories to her elementary school classmates.

“But that also depends on the person’s luck factor, and their popularity.”

Stefani Hid, a 22-year-old English literature student at Petra University in Surabaya, wrote her first novel, Bukan Saya, tapi Mereka yang Gila! (It’s Not Me, but It’s Them Who’re Crazy!), at the age of 16 and had it published two years later. Two more novels and several short stories have followed.

Although she has yet to try to pursue a living from literature, she worries that her works – dealing with “heavy” topics such as death and insanity, often presented in the form of stream-of-thought consciousness – will not be commercial.

“(T)he themes I usually put forward in my works are not too pop, so I think that if I stick with them when writing full-time, I wouldn’t sell enough to support myself. So perhaps I should have more sellable stuff, like sex.”

Akmal N. Basral already knows what spells commercial success. A journalist at Tempo newsmagazine by day, the father of three daughters has published three fiction books in the last two years, including this year’s bestselling Nagabonar Jadi 2 (Nagabonar Becomes Two), an adaptation of the hit film.

His income from writing fiction would be enough to support him on his own, he says.

“But if you want to have a standard of living like what you’d expect from other professions, at least enough to pay for a house and a motor vehicle plus to take care of your kids’ needs, then it’s very difficult. Not impossible, but very tough.”

Harumi, as well as contributing feature articles to the Weekender and other publications, focuses on copywriting, editing websites and company profiles to pay the bills.

“Professionally, most of my job usually involves writing. But I’m lucky in that I have no kids yet, and I have a few years of very strong professional experience. Otherwise, I can always be an English teacher as a fall-back plan.”

Freelancing is not easy; copywriting work is often tedious, full of technical mumbo-jumbo, and payment for project-based assignments can be tardy.

There also is the uncertainty of working from one job to the next. “I often have to ask myself: ‘now, what are you gonna do next?’”

Putting meaningful words on paper is easier said than done. Akmal says that when he encounters “… potholes or traps, so to speak, in telling the story, then the writing process becomes not as simple as I previously thought.”

For Netta, there also are the inner demons of self-doubt, laziness and exposing one’s work to public scrutiny.

Then if it is this hard, why do they keep on writing?

All four respond to the question excitedly. Harumi puts it simply: “Because I like it, and am good at it, and I make a living out of it.”

Netta also professes her deep love of writing. “I write because there is something I need to get out of me. Otherwise, it wouldn’t feel good.”

“You could say that ‘I write, therefore I am,’” says Stefani. “Writing makes my thoughts immortal, and it makes me sensitive toward life, making life more lively and meaningful.”

Akmal considers it a powerful, innate passion.

“My drive to keep on writing is becoming very similar to my drive to keep on breathing, because life is too beautiful to be taken for granted, nor to be enjoyed only by oneself. Writing is one of the most economic ways to share, but its impact often surprises the writers themselves.”

That struggle to write against all odds concurs with American writer Bill Barich’s description of the universal sameness of the writer’s life: “Hard days, lots of work, no money, too much silence. Nobody’s fault. You chose it.”

They also chose writing, or perhaps it chose them.

COZY STREET CORNER - Konzert am 20. September, 20.00 Uhr, GoetheHaus

September 17th, 2007 by nelden

COZY STREET CORNER

Concert on September 20th, 8 PM, GoetheHaus

Hearing the name “Cozy Street Corner”, one will probably think of a small and nice café, a place where you can drink Cappuccino or eat Nasi Goreng, rather than an Indonesian band, consisting of three musicians, who have already known each other since high school. But in a way, their name represents the kind of music they play, because while listening to it, you might actually feel like sitting in such a café.

Christian Takarbessy, Boby Priambodo and Petrus Briyanto Adi think it is highly important to stay authentic and not become too commercial just to increase the sales figures of their albums. To survive in the music market with such high principles is not always easy nowadays – but even so, “Cozy Street Corner” managed to release three albums and gained a loyal crowd of fans.

Their music is basically accessible guitar pop, but combined with elements from other music genres like rock, folk, traditional music and even exotic sounds from the Middle East. In their lyrics, they tell stories about love, nature or daily habits like drinking coffee in the morning.

The band is also well-known for the relaxed and stirring atmosphere during their live performances. The Goethe-Institut Jakarta has invited “Cozy Street Corner” on September 20nd to perform at the GoetheHaus. The concert will start at 8 PM.

DRAGONFLY

(for a distant friend)

Dragonfly, dragonfly

You are not a firefly

Don’t you fly into the candle

T’pain is more than you could handle

Don’t you get too near the flame

If you burn then who’s to blame?

Dragonfly, dragonfly

Away he flies, as the lust dies

Dragonfly, dragonfly

He’ll say goodbye, don’t you cry

Spread your wings, lift up your head

So many springs shall come ahead

Steven Wright’s way of looking at things

February 13th, 2007 by nelden

If you’re not familiar with the work of Steven Wright, he’s a famous comic in the U.S. and once said: "I woke up one morning and all of my stuff had been stolen and replaced by exact duplicates." His mind sees things differently than most of us do, to our amazement and amusement. Here are some of his gems:

1 - I’d kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.

2 - Borrow money from pessimists — They don’t expect it back.

3 - Half the people you know are below average.

4 - 99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name.

5 - 82.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

6 - A conscience is what hurts when all your other parts feel so good.

7 - A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.

8 - If you want the rainbow, you got to put up with the rain.

9 - All those who believe in psycho-kinesis, raise my hand.

10 - The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

11 - I almost had a psychic girlfriend…..but she left me before we met.

12 - OK, so what’s the speed of dark?

13 - How do you tell when you’re out of invisible ink?

14 - If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.

15 - Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm.

16 - When everything is coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane.

17 - Ambition is a poor excuse for not having enough sense to be lazy.

18 - Hard work pays off in the future, laziness pays off now.

19 - If your car could travel at the speed of light, would your headlights work?

20 - If Barbie is so popular, why do you have to buy her friends?

21 - Eagles may soar, but weasels don’t get sucked into jet engines.

22 - What happens if you get scared half to death twice?

23 - My mechanic told me, "I couldn’t repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."

24 - Why do psychics have to ask you for your name?

25 - If at first you don’t succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.

26 - A conclusion is the place where you got tired of thinking.

27 - Experience is something you don’t get until just after you need it.

28 - The hardness of the butter is proportional to the softness of the bread.

29 - To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research.

30 - The problem with the gene pool is that there is no lifeguard.

31 - The sooner you fall behind, the more time you’ll have to catch up.

32 - The colder the x-ray table, the more of your body is required to be on it.

33 - Everyone has a photographic memory; some just don’t have film.

34 - I intend to live forever……so far, so good.

KUDA BETINA–cerpen

January 24th, 2007 by nelden

Cerpen ini pernah dimuat dalam Harian Suara Pembaruan, Minggu 20 April 2003.

(From my short-story archive)

KUDA BETINA

Cerpen: Nelden Djakababa

Tania melihat seekor kuda betina warna hitam legam pada malam gerhana bulan. Hitam yang paling gelap. Betapa kuda itu indah karena liar. Rambutnya menyapu-nyapu angin.

Begitu pikir Tania.

Tania langsung mengklik nama Tantyo di inbox. Muncullah e-mail terbaru dari Tantyo.

Tania cayang,

Ayo dong. Teruslah semangat belajar. Jangan putus asa. ‘kan sedikit lagi kamu lulus. Ayolah cayang. Ingatlah, kamu adalah harapan hidupku satu-satunya. Setelah kamu lulus, kita akan menikah. Cayangku, kamulah masa depanku. Karenanya, semangatlah belajar!

Nah tuh, kamu sudah kuberi semangat. Coba, kurang baik bagaimana lagi kekasihmu ini? ;)

Cayangmu,

Tantyo.

Tania melongo di depan layar komputer. Tantyo sama sekali tidak menyalahkan dirinya. Belum pernah ia begini. Kepala Tania seperti berputar-putar. Mulutnya komat kamit tanpa suara membaca e-mail Tantyo berulang-ulang. Komat kamit itu membuat mulut Tania kering. Ia berusaha menelan ludah. Sulit sekali. Yang muncul malah rasa enek di tenggorokannya. Ia tidak mengerti mengapa Tantyo tidak mengomelinya. Ia merasa seperti tercekik.

"Iya."

"Masuk angin kali ya."

"Iya, mungkin gara- gara belajar semalaman untuk midtes."

"Alaa, paling juga dia hamil."

"Hush! Sembarangan!"

"Ya bisa saja, kan?!"

"Huh!"

Setelah bosan berdebat, mereka kembali sibuk menekuni dunia virtual masing- masing.

Di kost, Tania mandi lagi. Bau muntah hilang. Mata Tania memberat. Otot-otot tubuhnya mulai mengendur satu per satu. Namun pikirannya terus bekerja.

Mengapa tadi dirinya muntah? Ia malah berusaha memberinya semangat. Seharusnya aku berbahagia, pikir Tania. Tapi mengapa tadi ia malah muak waktu membaca kata-kata Tantyo?

Kamulah masa depanku, Tania

kamu

adalah….

harapan….

hidupku….

satu satunya….

kamu….

adalah….

masa….

depan….

aku ….

Rasa tenggorokan tercekik itu muncul lagi.

Kamu - lulus - untuk - masa - depan - aku - kurang - baik - bagaimana - lagi - aku- ? - :)

Bahkan simbol senyum itu terasa seperti makin mencekik.

Tania hendak berontak, tapi tubuhnya sudah terlalu letih. Otot- ototnya rileks. Kelopak matanya makin berat. Lalu terkatup. Tania melihat bukit itu lagi. Malam.

Sakit sekali. Seorang lelaki tanpa wajah menindih tubuh kuda betina hitam itu. Lelaki itu mendesis.

"Susu kuda liarku…." Lelaki itu berusaha memerahnya.

"Ayo manis, berikan susumu kepadaku…." Kuda malang itu berontak menggeliat berusaha menjatuhkan lelaki itu. Kakinya menendang-nendang, membuat kawat pengikat kaki makin dalam mengiris dagingnya. Perih.

Iiiiiiii…!

"Cayang-ku!" teriak lelaki itu.

Iiiiiiiiiii…!

Tania terperanjat sampai duduk. Ia membuka mata lebar-lebar. Bayangan kuda sengsara itu lenyap. Tapi napas Tania begitu sesak. Ia cepat-cepat menarik udara masuk dari hidungnya. Terlalu cepat. Ia batuk-batuk. Kulitnya mengkilat oleh banjiran keringat. Detak jantungnya begitu kuat dan cepat. Tania dapat merasakan seluruh wajahnya berdenyut. Lalu ia mulai menyadarinya.

Ia sangat letih. Tania meraih handuk di dekat tempat tidur. Pelan-pelan ia menyeka tubuhnya. Handuk kecil itu menyerap peluh dari wajah. Leher. Pundak. Ketiak. Lengan. Jari-jari tangan. Kembali ke ketiak. Punggung. Melingkari payudara. Mengitari pusar. Pinggang. Pantat. Selangkangan. Paha. Belakang lutut. Betis. Jari-jari kaki. Tarikan napas Tania kembali dalam dan lambat. Setiap embus dari hidung membawa pergi sedikit penat tubuhnya. Terus, Tania, terus, gumamnya.

Tarik napas, tahan, hembus. Pelan- pelan.

Tarik napaaas. Tahaaan. Embusss. Pelan-pelaaannn….

Begitu terus, sampai akhirnya seluruh rasa berat itu meninggalkan tubuh Tania.

Malam kembali turun di Yogyakarta. Tania berada di warnet itu lagi. Wajahnya agak pucat, tapi sangat tenang. Bibirnya seperti hampir tersenyum.

Membacanya, aku langsung merasa tercekik.

Tania.

Tania mengklik tombol send.

Awas. Awas…."

So this is Christmas (War is Over)

December 25th, 2006 by nelden

(John Lennon)

So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
Ans so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear
And so this is Christmas
For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones
The world is so wrong
And so happy Christmas
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones
Let’s stop all the fight
A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear
And so this is Christmas
And what have we done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
Ans so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young
A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear
War is over over
If you want it
War is over
Now…
